On FRIDAY - May 30th, 2008, Sugo had an amazing turn out for our Barolo/Pecorino pairing (see below). Check back this week for information about our next special!

Barolo Pecorino Pairing 5.30.08

About the Vineyard:
The Massara vineyard lies at 265 meters above sea level in the commune of Verduno. The total area is 122 hectares, all planted with the Nebbiolo variety. The white soil is mainly chalky clay and the vineyard faces south-east.
Ageing
Ageing took place in large oak casks for 31 months, followed by 3 months in steel and 11 months in the bottle.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet red, with orange highlights. Intense nose of ripe fruit, sweet tobacco and spices. Rich tannic backbone with a fresh finish.
Particularities and Vintage Notes
The great structure and hardness of the soil produce an elegant fullness of qualities in the wine. The 1996 vintage is remembered for a higher than average rain fall. This hearty Barolo was paired with:

Pecorino Gran Cru

Made in Sassari, the best pecorino producing area in Sardegna, from 100% sheep’s milk and aged for 20 months in the Parmigiano Reggiano method. It's flavor is sweet with a balanced structure and carries a bouquet of fresh milk, a rare feature in matured cheeses. The texture is medium–firm; great for cubing or Flaking.

Tuscany and Sardinia are the regions with the longest and most distinguished traditions of making Pecorino Cheeses in Italy. Academia Barilla Pecorino is granted the prestigious D.O.P distinction.

Our guest speaker will be Winemaker - Yann Bourigault

For over 40 years Georges Duboeuf has been the Beaujolais region's most renowned négociant and is today regarded in the wine world as the "King of Beaujolais." Born in 1933 in Pouilly-Fuissé, the son of a winegrower, Georges began selling his family's wines from the back of his bicycle to now-legendary local chefs such as Paul Bocuse and Paul Blanc. In 1964 Georges realized his dream and founded his own company: Les Vins Georges Duboeuf.

Over the years, Georges has developed long-standing relationships with the region's top growers and winemakers. Georges is involved in every aspect of his enterprise and is known for his passion and his legendary palate. Georges Duboeuf is one of the world's best-known French brands.
Yann Bourigault is currently serving as the ambassador for Georges Duboeuf wines to North America. He travels to the USA several times each year, most importantly to present the upcoming releases of the Cru Beaujolais wines

Kunde Estates Wine Dinner - 6:30pm 7/24/08

Sugo Restaurant & Tapas' Monthly Wine Dinner Series continues on Thursday July 24th featuring the award winning wines of Kunde Estates Winery and Vineyards of Sonoma, California.

Our guest speaker will be Winemaker - Jeff Kunde

Family owned and operated, Kunde Estate Winery & Vineyards produces ultra-premium, estate-grown, and sustainably farmed wines in the finest traditions of the renowned Sonoma Valley. The founder, Louis Kunde, who emigrated from Germany, acquired the Wildwood Vineyards ranch with its acclaimed iron-rich, ancient red volcanic soils in 1904. These vineyards were first planted in 1879 by pioneer John Drummond with imported cuttings from Chateaux Margaux and Lafite Rothschild.

In October 2004, three-generations of the Kunde family gathered with friends to celebrate our 100th harvest, and to honor all the hard work and dedication that came through us and before us. As they enter the next century of wine growing, the fourth and fifth generation family members remain hands-on proprietors. They now oversee an operation comprised of our state-of-the-art wine making facility and 1,850 contiguous acres, of which 700 acres are planted to more than twenty different varieties of wine grapes.

Live entertainment will be provided by Michael Carlton King.
